A Symbol of Early American History

Whether viewed as historical figure, cultural symbol, or both, Betsy Ross represents the spirit of innovation, perseverance, and service that defined the Revolutionary era.

Betsy Ross is a figure often associated with the creation of the first American flag. Born in 1752 in Philadelphia, she was a skilled upholsterer and craftswoman whose story has become an enduring part of United States history.

While historians continue to debate the exact details, Betsy Ross remains a symbol of the craftsmanship, resilience, and patriotism present during the nation’s founding era.

US Flag Story

According to family tradition, Betsy Ross was asked in 1776 by a small committee, which reportedly included George Washington, to sew a flag for the new nation. The story says she suggested the five-pointed star design, which could be cut with a single snip of scissors.

Although definitive historical proof is limited, the story became widely known in the late 1800s and helped cement her place in American cultural history.
